Netflix’s new true crime documentary series “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” was released on Feb. 22, 2023, quickly rising to the top of the streaming platform’s “Top 10 TV Shows” list over the weekend.

The three-part series focuses on the recent murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh that occurred on June 7, 2021. What follows in the ongoing investigation are revelations that uncover the story of a troubled family connected to many secrets and mysterious deaths.

In the first episode we meet the Murdaugh’s—Alex, Maggie, Buster and Paul—who reside in the Low Country region of Hampton, South Carolina, where Alex serves as the district attorney. Throughout several interviews, the local townspeople paint a picture of who the Murdaugh’s truly are—the epitome of elite wealth and privilege running rampant in a small Southern town.

However, their perfect image comes crumbling down when a boating accident results in the death of Hampton local, Mallory Beach, with Paul Murdaugh behind the wheel. The documentary unravels the Murdaugh’s involvement in covering up Mallory’s death, also uncovering two other mysterious deaths that are rumored to be tied to the family.

The series culminates in a shocking twist when, less than three years after Beach’s death, Paul and his mother Maggie are found murdered outside of their home. The police soon arrest a suspect who is currently still standing trial for the double murder—Alex Murdaugh.

The rest of the documentary is spent trying to fathom why Alex would have motive to kill his wife and youngest son. What follows is a dark trail of drugs, death and embezzlement hidden in the family’s past.

Although this case has not been solved yet, Netflix’s series is still a must watch for any true crime lovers or curious viewers. The documentary does not exploit the victims, but instead manages to honor their memory while seeking justice for them and their families. “Murdaugh Murders: A Southern Scandal” is not only thrilling and suspenseful for viewers but also exposes the extent of corruption that lies at the heart of the justice and judicial systems in America.

The limited series is currently streaming on Netflix and certainly one you don’t want to miss.
