Culparoo occupied all floors of the D.P. Culp Center on Sept. 7, displaying all of the different opportunities and amenities the building and campus offers to students.

“It’s really nice to know that there are a lot of departments here that are oriented towards helping students,” said Kyoko Smith, a computer science major.

The annual Culparoo event hosts many departments and organizations at booths to talk to the students and faculty about their purpose and mission. Departments such as the Mary V. Jordan Multicultural Center, the University Advisement Center, the Health Administration Student Association, the Asian American Student Association and Model United Nations were all set up at various times throughout the day. Students were also offered prizes for participation at the booths.

“We have a place here with the Multicultural center where we get to learn about the different cultures and get to learn about you and your points of view. To me the Multicultural Center is a melting pot, a place where we can all come and celebrate and get to know more about individual people. We invite students to host more activities here, we want people to know that we are available to everyone,” said Christa Reid, coordinator of the Multicultural Center’s Student Access and Success program.

The Multicultural Center is located on the second floor of the D.P. Culp Center. The Student Access and Success program offers underrepresented students assistance in acclimating to their studies at East Tennessee State University.

The Multicultural Center’s Black Affairs Association also held a Vibe n’ Paint event for Culparoo, where students were invited to paint canvases while they listened to music.

“We advise students that are undeclared, or we help you with your major exploration. Another service we offer is academic coaching, so if you feel you need a little bit of support in learning how to take notes from college textbooks, getting organized or just talking with your professors, we can help you with time management,” said Stefanie Murphy, an academic counselor for the University Advisement Center.

The University Advisement Center is located on the second floor of the D.P. Culp Center in the Carrier Center. The center offers new students and current students advising and information resources for their choice of study. The center also has a Learning Support Program for students whose college entrance test scores demonstrate a specific academic need.

The Culparoo event allowed students to take a break from their day with live music and festivities. A live band performance by Morgan’s Mill was conducted in the Dining Hall for students to enjoy while they dined. Buctainment held a tie-dye event, ETSUCon held a Pop Culture Trivia Event and the Hispanic American Student Alliance held a game of Lotteria. All of these events served the purpose of integrating students into ETSU’s culture with a sense of community.
