Tammy Hayes, a professor for the ETSU Department of Media and Communication, celebrated retirement from the university after 27 years of teaching. Hayes was a professor for the broadcasting and media studies program and played a major role in shaping the program to what it has become today.

“She taught hundreds of students during her tenure and did so with strength, compassion and dedication. Her impact can be felt in the success of so many students and she was always a strong voice and advocate for the underserved, believing that everyone’s voice deserved to be heard,” said Candy Bryant, multimedia specialist and equipment manager for the department.

In addition to being a dedicated teacher in the classroom, Hayes also contributed to many student organizations and activities on campus as well.

“Tammy served not only as a teacher but helped produce many television programs and was an advisor for the student-run ‘Buc News’ and Buc TV.  She also advised ASI (Alpha Sigma Iota) and coordinated many learning experiences and special events for the students,” Bryant stated.

Although the impact of her departure will be felt among the students, Hayes will also be missed by members of the faculty at ETSU who will remember her for the kindness and dedication she always displayed.

“Tammy welcomed me into the department and was always there for me, during good and bad times. I was very lucky to find my best friend in the workplace, and I learned that kindness and love always win, no matter the situation,” said Bryant.

While Hayes may no longer be a professor at ETSU, her influence and work at the Media and Communication department serves as a reminder of her dedication to the university and community on campus.

“I hope that Tammy realizes the impact she had on so many students and colleagues and how much we love and miss her.  But we are forever grateful for the time spent together at ETSU and wish her joy and happiness as she moves on to the next chapter of her life.  To borrow from one of her favorite TV shows, my message to her is ‘Thank you for being a friend.’”
