The Milton Marathon event returns in person to ETSU this year at the Reece Museum on Thursday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public and consists of an all-day reading of the epic poem “Paradise Lost” written by John Milton. Joshua Reid, ETSU English professor and director of the Milton Marathon event, said he was happy to see the event return in person and on campus and to have the opportunity to introduce Milton’s work to new audiences.

“John Milton is one of the most important English poets in history, and it’s almost impossible to fully account for the impact and influence his work ‘Paradise Lost’ has had on popular culture and media throughout history,” Reid said. ‘Paradise Lost’ is a retelling of the book of Genesis in the form of an epic poem, such as the ‘Iliad’ or ‘Beowulf.‘ The poem expands on characters such as Satan, Adam or Eve and explores the narrative beneath the surface of the original biblical text.

“It is the most important work of biblical fanfiction that’s ever been written. It’s such a work of imagination, of breath and depth,” Reid said.

Several special guests will be in attendance to read sections of the poem throughout the day, including President Brian Noland, members of the ETSU faculty, and some student participants.

Even if individuals do not have a passion for literature, all are still encouraged to come to the event to experience the power of Milton’s poetry.

“There’s something about being there in person and hearing the words spoken out loud that always wins over the Milton Marathon participants. John Milton composed this poem verbally after he had become blind, and so he was very attentive to the sound of his poetry and its power,” Reid stated.

In addition to listening to the epic poem, there will also be a collection of Milton inspired artwork, poetry and rare versions of illustrations from “Paradise Lost” dating back to the seventeenth century. There will also be some free items available for attendees such as bookmarks and a drawing for students who attend the marathon who can enter into a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card drawing.

Although it is encouraged for participants to attend the event in person, there will also be a zoom link available for the event (Meeting ID: 849 3534 8474 / Passcode: Milton).
