Alex Daugherty worked for the East Tennessean from 2018 to 2020. He served as a general assignment athletics reporter during his time with the publication.

Daugherty graduated in 2019 and received a bachelor’s degree in English with a minor in journalism; he received a master’s degree in brand and media strategy in 2021.

He currently works as a social media coordinator for Six Rivers Media, managing social media accounts for the Johnson City Press, Kingsport Times News, Bristol Now, Jonesborough Herald and Tribune, Erwin Record and Mountain City Tomahawk newspapers. He creates strategies to get engagement for target audiences, and increasing subscriptions and views.

“Delivering news to the social media world is becoming the norm, and just being able to get the news out to someone brings value to me,” said Daugherty.  “I love working with the people here. Everyone is so nice and helpful. They are always willing to aid and assist in any game plans or strategies I have in mind. It’s a great place.”

While he no longer serves on the writing end of the paper, he mentioned his experience with the East Tennessean helped him communicate better with people and understand the importance of journalism.

“Even with my job now, I always review each story of the day and determine what should go out on social media first and which story will get the most engagement from our audience,” Daugherty concluded. “Communication is key in the media world.”
