Kirk Sprinkles Pfeiffer, an adjunct instructor for ETSU Theatre and Dance, brought a special Broadway guest to visit one of his dance classes this semester.

Yuka Notsuka, a dancer for the Broadway musical “Cats,” visited ETSU and shared her talents and skills with ETSU students while she was in town for a performance at the Martin Center earlier this month. Originally from Fukuoka, Japan, Notsuka has traveled all over the world.

“She is a personal friend who was on tour with ‘Cats,’ so I asked her if she would teach a master class to my students,” Pfeiffer explained. “Once the news was announced to the students they were excited from then on. The students loved her and the class.”

Notsuka attended the dance composition technique class and taught original choreography and worked with students on proper technique, poster and controlling dance movements. There were also some chances for students to show their skills to Notsuka and make their own routines.

Pfeiffer believes by bringing people like Notsuka to his class, it gives students the chance to create a connection to the professional world and a reference for those who are serious about pursuing careers in dance or musical theater.

“I find it inspiring to see the students’ energy, attitude and focus shift with the presence of a guest artist. They are motivated throughout the class experience,” said Pfeiffer.

He also hopes to bring an ETSU alumni currently touring with “Chicago” back to his class when it comes to the Martin Center April 25 and 26.
