In 2021, ETSU’s radio station, The EDGE 89.5 HD4, moved into the Student Media Center in the D.P Culp Center. Before they moved, however, they were located in Warf-Pickel Hall.

What makes it the most interesting is that while they were there, they seemed to have picked up a ghost and she followed them in the move.

With a beautiful stained-glass window of her in Nicks Hall, Alice has been haunting the EDGE radio station for a long time and is said to be from the Depression Era, according to an East Tennessean article from 2021 (Taylor Maupin, October 31, 2021).

Candy Bryant, an ETSU alum and manager of The EDGE, learned about Alice during her time as an undergraduate.

Lore and Bryant state that Alice was the daughter of a wealthy family who lived where ETSU is today (estimated to be around parking services) and that she suffered from a classic Romeo and Juliet scenario. When her father paid the young man to leave, she found out and hung herself shortly thereafter.

As for today, there continue to be incidents of her involvement, and she is described as good but mischievous. DJs experience situations in which records stop for no reason, items move with no one having touched them, and lights turn off even though the DJ is the only one there at the time.

Bryant had an experience with her too.

“I was alone and on the air,” explained Bryant. “Suddenly every machine and light turned on throughout the station. Tape was spinning off the machine, on-air lights were blinking off and on and music from our production studios was blaring.”

The radio station invited Alice to move with them and noticed that she had come with them when the pranks started back up again in their new location.

She seems to like the songs and playing pranks, following the DJs for those same reasons and most interactions are about the same, though they are very brief when they do happen, and no one has ever seen her.

And so, the Culp has its first ghost.
