The Met Gala 2023 took place this past Monday, and the theme was fittingly “in honor of Karl,” paying homage to the late designer Karl Lagerfeld.

Lagerfeld was a German designer who got his start in the 1950s with fashion houses such as Balmain, Chloé, Fendi and Patou. In 1983, he began his career as creative director at Chanel, which lasted until his death in 2019.

He also operated his own brand that was designed to inspire “intellectual sexiness.” The tenants of his designs are summed up as Baroque, Rococo and both history and future minded.

Many attendees paid homage to Lagerfeld’s personal love of black and white ensembles. Jenna Ortega wore a Thon Brown corseted black gown that featured a high, starched collar, incorporating Lagerfeld’s love of historical silhouettes. Another celebrity showing a white collar was Kendall Jenner, who had on a black and white glittery bodysuit and cape.

Tweed gowns were also seen on attendees, from Anne Hathaway to Dua Lipa to Keke Palmer.

Many celebrities were bejeweled with pearls and crystals. Kim Kardashian wore a Schiaparelli gown that consisted of draped pearls over her bust and bottom with a nude corset.

Lil Nas X showed up in head-to-toe pearlescent body paint and pearl appliques all over his face. He even had glittering whiskers, hearkening back to Lagerfeld’s love of cats. Other people also showed up in cat-themed outfits, such as Doja Cat, who used prosthetics to make her face more feline, and Jared Leto, who just wore a full-on cat costume.

Some attendees brought a pop of color to carpet. Kylie Jenner, Pedro Pascal and Salma Hayek wore bold red, while Emma Chamberlain and Donatella Versace wore soft pastel blues and pinks.

Overall, classic and opulent styles were seen across the gala, with all calling back to some facet of Karl Lagerfeld’s work or personal interests.
