Although we are already well into January, I wanted to share some ways we celebrate the New Year in East Tennessee. In addition, I want to share some picturesque spots to add to your bucket list if you are new to the area.
For starters, Black-eyed peas, collard greens and ham with a side of cornbread is the ultimate New Year’s dish. Likely dating back to the Civil War as tradition, the meal is said to bring prosperity and good fortune. Another New Year’s tradition is being selective about the first guest you let into your home (or dorm). The superstition is that the first guest to cross the threshold into your home sets the tone for the new year. Lastly, having a full pantry symbolizes a bountiful new year which originated from farmers in the South who wanted their crops to flourish.
There are many places in Tennessee worth visiting, and I am especially fond of trails and scenic overlooks in our region. I have compiled a list of some of the top places to visit this year:
Kuwohi, formerly called Clingman’s Dome, is the highest point in Tennessee. It is in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park at 6,643 feet where the views are spectacular. The new name honors the mountain as one of the Cherokee people’s sacred places. It is best visited after April and before December as the road leading up to the tower is closed during the winter. I suggest visiting early to see the sunrise or later in the evening on a weekday for the sunset.
Next, the Cumberland Gap is a National Historical Park known as a natural passageway in the Appalachian Mountains. It was home to several indigenous tribes and later, a significant landmark of Civil War battles. The park offers scenic overlooks, yearly festivals, waterfalls, cave tours and more. Be sure to check the calendar on its website.
In addition, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the state is Ozone Falls. Parts of “The Jungle Book” were filmed in this location. The path to the waterfall is rocky and steep, but it is worth the trek.
Furthermore, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Ruby Falls is one of the top destinations for those looking for phenomenal views. A short hike to Lookout Mountain allows tourists to see seven states while primarily overlooking Chattanooga. Ruby Falls features underground waterfalls explored through guided tours at an affordable price.
Lastly, Cade’s Cove is the most popular and busiest destination in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. It is an 11-mile loop open year-round. It features a visitor center, pull-offs to take pictures of scenic views, several hiking trails and historical sites. Many animals such as deer, elk, bears, turkeys and woodchucks are often seen while touring the loop. The hike to Abrams Falls is very popular. I suggest visiting early in the day if you get the chance.
I am grateful for another year at ETSU and the opportunity to write for the East Tennessean. I hope you all seize the chance to experience the beauty of our region this year!
