On Saturday, Feb. 14, the ETSU women’s tennis team competed in their third home match of the season against Lipscomb University. With ETSU having a record of 3-2 and Lipscomb having an undefeated record, everyone knew there was going to be a tough battle for the win.
First up to start things off were the three doubles matches. Alessandra Caceres and Mariangel Estrella were the first up, and they were able to blow their opponents out of the water. The team of Julia Millan and Ksenija Rage unfortunately had an unfinished match, so it was up to the final doubles match to secure the point. The duo of Niyati Kukreti and Audelie Lesauvage pulled through with an outstanding win, getting ETSU a point to start off the match.
Next were the the singles matches, where all 6 players listed above participated. Lipscomb was able to win the first singles match, but Caceres pulled through to win her game and give the Buccaneers the lead once again. This back and forth continued with Lipscomb winning the third singles match, tying back up with ETSU. Lesauvage turned it around by winning her match, making the score 3-2 with ETSU winning by a single point.
These last two matches were the most important, and would determine who won the whole match. Lipscomb was able to pull through with their third win, tying to score back up. With only one match left, both teams knew that they had to win for their team. Estrella was able to secure that final point for the Buccaneers, allowing ETSU to win the entire match.
With a three match winning streak on the line, the Buccaneers will go against Virginia Tech on Sunday, Feb. 22 in Blacksburg, Va. With both teams sporting a winning record, 4-2 for ETSU and 3-2 for Virginia Tech, the game will surely be tense with the desire to add another win to their belt.
