On March 27-29, ETSU’s baseball team competed against the Virginia Military Institute in a three-game series. While both were close games, the scores from Friday and Saturday were in favor of the Buccaneers. Both teams showed great effort but the Bucs were not going to let this win slip away from them that easily.

During Friday’s game, VMI thought they had the win with a 4-2 lead. But ETSU brought it back, scoring three runs in the seventh inning. VMI’s Fitzwater and Raile tied for top scorer in the game. However, on the Bucs side, Ian Guanzon hit a two-run home run.

Saturday’s game led to yet another win for ETSU with the score ending in a 4-3 match. The game started off strong with ETSU scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. However, things slowed down until VMI caught up, scoring two points at the top of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough to take the game into overtime.

Pitcher Michael Harpster managed to strike out seven VMI hitters and only allowed one unearned run while facing 25 batters. Meanwhile, Stratton Scott earned a career save, giving the final three outs. Leaving the team’s overall score as 19-6.

VMI salvaged the last game of the series with a 5-4 comeback win in the ninth inning. You can continue to support ETSU’s baseball team by tuning into ESPN+ on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they travel to Birmingham, Alabama, to face off against Samford.
