Contributed/Johnson City DoughboysThe Johnson City Doughboys are a member of the Appalachian Development League, which is an organization that partners with Major League Baseball and USA Baseball to prepare college athletes from all over the country to live as a pro-baseball player. Not only does this allow the athletes to gain exposure to the day-to-day activities of an MLB player, but it also allows them to establish a draft card and get recognized by scouts. In return, the MLB is exposed to these athletes and can potentially notice players that may have gone unnoticed. The most interesting thing about the Johnson City Doughboys is that in their partnership with MLB, the league office actually creates their roster for them. That information will not be released for a few weeks, until the season is closer and they get everything prepared for the teams to begin work.

The Johnson City Doughboys have a rich history within the city, being an official team since 1975. Originally called the Johnson City Cardinals and being affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals, they rebranded in 2021 alongside the structural changes to Minor League Baseball. Sporting a new name, the Johnson City Doughboys, which was inspired by a statue that rests behind their home stadium, which honors the infantryman that died during WW1.

In an interview with the Johnson City Doughboys General Manager, Patrick Ennis, we asked him about his favorite part of working with the team. He said that his favorite thing is “seeing the families coming out for a night, having a smile on their face, and having a fun time all together. I kinda joke that I am so focused on the fans during the game, that sometimes I don’t even know what’s going on on the field.”

While the Johnson City Doughboys promotion schedule is not yet official, make sure to keep an eye out and cheer on the local baseball team. With a summer of fun theme nights, giveaways and players looking for wins, it will be interesting to keep up with the Johnson City Doughboys the next few months as they begin preparing for their season.
