Students in several Johnson City elementary schools had a memorable experience as part of Read Across Tennessee Month when Riley the Reading Raccoon made a special appearance.
Riley, the official literacy mascot of the Tennessee Department of Education, made a visit to Towne Acres, Fairmont and Mountain View elementary schools. The surprise visit focused on awarding and celebrating students who have shown a continued commitment to reading throughout the year. Many students were recognized for their reading achievements, highlighting their dedication to academics both in and out of the classroom.
At each school, Riley presented certificates to students to celebrate their achievements and foster a culture that values academic achievement. Classrooms were filled with lots of excitement as students welcomed Riley and celebrated themselves.
The event was part of an effort to promote early literacy. The Tennessee Department of Education, the Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation and TopperWorks collaborated to make the visit possible. These groups work to ensure that students build strong literacy skills starting from a young age and recognize that early reading success plays an important role in future academic success.
The visit also emphasized the important role that teachers and school administrators play behind the scenes. Through their continued support, students were able to set and achieve their reading goals. They created an environment where reading is both valued and celebrated.
Riley’s visit motivated students to continue developing their reading habits.
As Read Across Tennessee Month continues, events like this reflect Johnson City Schools’ ongoing commitment to promoting early academic achievement and a culture of literacy.
