From Thursday, April 16, through Saturday, April 17, the ETSU women’s tennis team made their way to Chattanooga to compete in the SoCon Tournament. These were their last three games of the season, and they were hunting for a trophy. They beat top seed Furman 4-1 in the final.
Their first match was against Mercer on April 16, and they started off with a bang. The Buccaneers won 2 out of the 3 doubles matches, taking that point and setting them in the lead. For the singles matches, 3 out of 6 of the games went unfinished, making the other 3 extremely important. Winning all 3 of those matches gave ETSU the win, sweeping Mercer with a final score of 4-0.
Their second match happened on April 17 against University of Tennessee Chattanooga, ETSU’s biggest rivals in the Southern Conference. The doubles matches once again started great for ETSU, winning 2 matches with the third going unfinished. However, the singles matches were a lot closer, with ETSU only winning 3 of the 6. However, one of the matches went unfinished, and ETSU was able to pull off the win. With a final score of 4-2, the Buccaneers were heading to the Championships.
The final match against Furman once again started off with a bang, with ETSU winning the first doubles match. However, when Furman won the second match, both teams knew the pressure the third match held. The Buccaneers were able to pull through, securing them their first point.
The singles matches began, and these scores were a lot closer. With ETSU winning the first match and Furman winning the second, these teams knew that every point counted. The next two games went unfinished, meaning that Furman had to win these last 2 matches in order to secure the title. The Buccaneers were able to pull through, winning both of these matches. With a final score of 4-1, the ETSU women’s tennis team won the SoCon Tournament.
With a final record of 16-7 and a conference record of 6-1, the ETSU women’s tennis team not only clinched the school’s fourth SoCon Tournament Title, they also secured their ticket to the NCAA women’s tennis tournament.
