On Sept. 21-22, the ETSU men’s golf team travelled to the Highlands Invitational tournament in Chicago, Illinois, for the second year in a row. This tournament consisted of 72 individuals and a total of 11 teams participating on a par 72 course. After placing second out of thirteen teams during the Highlands Invitational last season, the Buccaneers were ready to take home the victory.

The two players competing individually were freshmen Mikkel Tingsted Blum and Theophile Lebrun. Neither played in the Inverness Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the season, so this was their first opportunity to play for ETSU this season. Blum tied for 32nd place with a 6 over par 222. Lebrun followed behind in 57th place with an 11 over par 227.

The players competing for the ETSU team are Oli Blackadder, Gavin Tiernan, Richard Saunders, Veigar Heidarsson, and Erik Tjarnberg. Oli Blackadder ended the tournament tied for 39th place, with a 7 over par 223. Gavin Tiern and Richard Saunders tied for 15th place with a 2 over par 218. Veigar Heidarsson, a sophomore at ETSU this year, made the podium with a tie in 3rd place, with a 7 under par 209.

Erik Tjarnberg, another freshman on the team, completely blew away the competition by earning his first collegiate victory on his second start of the season. Tjarnberg had a 14 under par finish, with his final score coming to 202. The tournament was decided on the 18th hole, where Tjarnberg made an eagle, pushing himself one stroke ahead of the 2nd place competitor from Wake Forest University. Tjarnberg’s personal victory allowed ETSU to come out on top, winning their first tournament of the season.

The ETSU men’s golf team will be back in action from Sunday, October 4 to Tuesday, October 6 for the Trinity Forest Invitational in Dallas, Texas. After placing 9th out of 16 at this same tournament last year, the Buccaneers must be fired up for redemption.
