Working Lives in Appalachia is a new podcast from ETSU’s Office of Prestigious Awards that highlights the vocations of people in the region. The podcast tells stories of resilience, success and struggle while highlighting career features unique to the area’s community and culture.
The podcast was inspired by the book “Working” by Studs Terkel, in which people throughout the U.S. were interviewed to learn about what they do for work and how they feel about it.
The podcast creation is a collaboration of students from all different majors. By contributing to Working Lives in Appalachia, students can gain practical experience in areas such as editing, communications and marketing.
The first episode will have a focus on storytelling as a vocation. It is set to feature Terry Shaw, a book editor from Howling Hills Publishing, as well as Angela White, from the International Storytelling Center.
Chloe Campbell, creative director of the podcast, encourages fellow students at ETSU to listen to Working Lives in Appalachia.
“There is so much value in being able to learn from the working lives of others as we prepare for our working lives in Appalachia and elsewhere,” she said.
The first episode is set to be released at the end of October, a month fit for learning about spooky Appalachian folklore in relation to storytelling. It will be available on all major podcast streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music.
