East Tennessee State University’s women’s soccer squad has successfully finished the regular season.
Their tally against Atlantic Sun opponents is 4 wins, 3 losses and 2 ties. Their record is good enough for a fourth seed in the upcoming championship tournament to be held Nov. 2-4 at Kennesaw State University.
In early October the Bucs lost one home game after a questionable offside call to the Kennesaw State Owls. ETSU may be looking to avenge that loss in the tournament at Kennesaw in Georgia. The first draw for the Bucs will be Jacksonville University.
The Dolphins beat the Bucs last year in the tournament. However, ETSU proved they could dominate Jacksonville during the regular season.
The Bucs defense held tough and lifted the club to a 4-1 victory at the end of September. “Coach told us to get our socks dirty on defense,” said sophomore Meredith Goldman. The defensive intensity coupled with the return of Erin Bilyeu at keeper will definitely put wind in the sails for the Bucs. Bilyeu posted a shut-out against Lipscomb.
Heather Henson, head coach of the Buccaneer soccer team, says the last two non-conference games played were in preparation for the tournament. “We played ladies who had not gotten much playing time throughout the season. This was in effort to give us added depth going into the post season,” she said.
The Bucs faced a change of pace in the last two games of the season. “Virginia Tech is in the ACC, and did some things we haven’t seen,” Henson said.
