Dear Editor,
I would first like to thank the East Tennessean for their apology and for the opportunity to let our stance be heard on the Homecoming boycott, as we were not represented in the article released in the Oct. 19 edition of the East Tennessean.
It is highly regrettable that the actions of a few members from two organizations caused them not to be able to participate in Homecoming.
It is even more regrettable that instead of supporting their fellow Greeks and supporting our appeals that the other organizations chose to boycott Homecoming and not to participate with the campus. Sigma Chi as a chapter not only appealed the sanctions of our disciplinary actions, but also the decision telling us we could not participate in Homecoming. We do not see the need to boycott Homecoming or what positive consequences could come of that.
As a chapter we decided to ask the other organizations to rally behind us and support our appeals but were informed of their decision not to participate in Homecoming before we were able to speak to the other chapters.
Homecoming is one of the biggest ways the Greeks of ETSU show their support and participate in a positive and school-spirited event. The tradition of Homecoming at ETSU has suffered in the past few years and the Greek organizations are the main participants in what we have left of Homecoming.
Getting a strong Home-coming tradition at ETSU is a goal of Sigma Chi as well as keeping the friendly competition between the Greeks active, and hopefully never lead to the negative actions of those few members ever again.
Sigma Chi hopes for a very successful and positive Homecoming for ETSU this and every year, and that should this type of situation ever arise again that the Greek organizations will support their fellow Greeks and their campus rather than choosing not to participate.
Eddie Herbert
