As the season winds down for the Lady Bucs volleyball, it has brought them so much success. They have broken the school winning streak record, locked up a No. 1 seed in the Atlantic Sun tournament, and went undefeated in conference play this year.
The team had a radio show to recognize these achievements Wednesday night. Coach Lindsey Devine was on a recruiting trip in Canada, but she did call in to comment on the great work this team has done.
“They have a lot of heart and put out a lot of effort,” she said. “I am really proud of these girls and what they have accomplished.”
Since the tournament is coming up fast and they only have three road games left, the team looked back on this season to see what their favorite moments were. Senior Jennifer Sartor said, “I enjoy the congratulations and cheering in the locker room after every win. It is what we play for each game and it is nice to share in it.”
Junior Kaena Apana enjoyed a particular game this season. “Being my first year here and all, I heard Belmont was tough and a rival of ours. So, when we came back from two games down to defeat them, that was the highlight of my year,” she said.
Since the team has won 14 games consecutively now, they are looking forward to the tournament. “They will definitely be gunning for us,” Sartor said. “Belmont will be looking for revenge against us since we beat them here.”
The players realize that their 14-game winning streak means nothing come tournament time. “Everyone starts with a 0-0 record with each game, so it will be interesting,” Sartor said.
Apana agreed. “We will have targets on our backs. These will not be easy games.”
Now that the team has accomplished all this they are left with a sense of pride, yet they seem to want more.
“I seem to feel like a proud parent being my senior year and all; I think my senior year has been a great one,” Sartor said. “I am the oldest one on the team, so I have been a mentor and sister to the rest of the team.”
Apana acknowledged the team’s accomplishment so far and their expectations of future games. “I feel like we have gotten this much, now we want to win more. I hope we can get more.
