On Oct. 5, the campus held its Experience ETSU event in the Mini-Dome. Experience ETSU is a part of open house events that allows prospective students to see the different majors the school has to offer.
“There are students that are coming today where this could be their first introduction to ETSU at all,” said Dusty Duncan, associate director of Admissions. “We want them to see all that ETSU has to offer.”
Duncan said that over the years things have changed with open house, but Experience ETSU has been one of the events that has stayed the same.
“It seems to be what prospective students value the most when they come,” he said.
Duncan said that the event was broken up into different areas offering a full ETSU experience. Some of the booths that were set up at the Experience ETSU event included Clemmer College, departments from ETSU Health, Campus and Public Safety, Campus Recreation, Scholarship and Financial Aid, and Housing.
“We want to open parents’, students’ and guests’ eyes to all that ETSU has to offer,” Duncan said. “It’s really the most informative part of the day for them.”
One of the departments that was represented at Experience ETSU was the Women’s Studies Department. Jane McGowan, a student worker in the Women’s Studies office, said she encourages students to join the Women’s Studies Program by explaining what the program has to offer to different fields of study.
“Coming away from this we usually give them pamphlets about the requirements for the minor and business cards for the executive aid and the director,” she said.
McGowan encouraged visiting students to keep their options open while looking at the different booths at Experience ETSU.
“Keep an open mind,” McGowan said. “Stay plugged in with the people you get in contact with. Follow up with emails, and ask questions. Just don’t let it roll off your shoulders. Really try to get involved.”
Prospective student Madison Harosky said that she had heard a lot of good things about ETSU, and that the Experience ETSU event at open house left a good impression on her.
“There’s so many different majors and things that interest me,” Harosky said. “It’s really neat seeing all the possible things that I could go into here. It’s given me more options. I see that there’s a lot more that I haven’t even thought about that I would consider and enjoy going into.”
