While the warmth of spring isn’t here quite yet, Campus Recreation has a full lineup for the beginning of the semester that students can enjoy both indoors and out.

Kari Albarado, director of Campus Recreation, explained that the department’s main vision is to spearhead student engagement on and off campus.

“We want to give back and be a place on campus that students can engage in recreation,” Albarado said. “They can engage in the outdoors; they can come to us to get away from the stress of class. We really want to be that place on campus for students.”

To put the vision into action, Campus Recreation is implementing a group fitness punch pass to encourage participation for student, faculty and staff. Members who attend group classes during the first five weeks of this semester will receive punches into their card, and when completed the card can be submitted to be entered into a prize pack drawing.

Outdoor Adventure is also offering an interesting spring break trip to Florida from Saturday to Thursday of the break. Activities will include canoeing and camping and will be capped off with the rare opportunity of a swimming and snorkeling experience with native manatees. The total cost is $185 per student, with transportation, food, equipment and permit costs included.

In addition to activity, Campus Recreation provides a large source of on-campus employment for students, and Albarado expressed that many programs within Campus Recreation are seeking to employ more students. Campus Recreation is experienced in the program and schedule needs of students and athletes and offers flexible scheduling.

“We’re currently seeking intramural officials, also we’re always seeking certified American Red Cross lifeguards as well as facility assistants that work in our weight room and at the equipment desk,” Albarado said. “We work with APS students, Federal Work study students, as well as students that do not qualify for financial aid. We’re really open to that piece and really want students to know that this is a great place for employment for you on campus.”

For those interested in lifeguarding, certification classes are available in the spring semester.
