Big news for ETSU basketball fans — former Ohio State University assistant coach Simon Harris has been officially hired as the new head coach of the women’s basketball team.

Harris was formally introduced as the ninth head coach in program history on March 19, during a press conference at Brooks Gym.

“His energy, incredible personality, and tremendous basketball knowledge will provide a winning edge for the young women in our program,” ETSU Athletics Director Scott Carter said of Harris at the press conference.

Harris can be described as a basketball-lifer — his father was an assistant coach at North Carolina State, and Harris also played college basketball at N.C. State.

“I want this to be a players program,” Harris said in his opening statement. “We are here to lead, serve and help these young people.”

Following roles as an assistant coach at N.C. State, University of Dayton and Ohio State, Harris has landed his first head coaching job with the Buccaneers.

“I am so looking forward to just diving in and entrenching myself into this community,” Harris said.

This move comes less than two weeks after Carter announced that Brittney Ezell would not be returning to coach the team, following a 4-16 overall record in the 2020-2021 season. The ETSU women’s basketball team has finished with a combined record of 23-58 over their past three seasons.
