Campus Recreation is set to kick off its latest fitness and wellness program, First Year Fit Team, on Sept. 21.

“First Year Fit Team is going to be a program for freshmen or first-year transfer students, and it’s going to meet for the remainder of the semester,” said Halie Darby, Coordinator of Fitness and Wellness for Campus Recreation.

The program will meet weekly, and it aims to approach many aspects of fitness and wellness to help establish a foundation for students who are interested in a balanced lifestyle.

“The entire goal of the program is for us to help them to establish themselves in fitness and wellness,” said Darby, “so that they become lifelong participants in these types of programs.”

The program is partnering with Outdoor Adventure.

“We’ll be going zip lining together on the challenge course,” said Darby. “A lot of what we’ll be doing is going to be outside this semester.”

The emphasis on community found around campus is a core value for First Year Fit Team.

“This is really the opportunity to find their family here on campus through a fitness and wellness program,” said Darby. “We’ll be doing group workouts together, so, really just hitting every angle of fitness and wellness that we can so that we can provide as many resources as possible to the students who are participating.”

The program will also be partnering with Counseling Services, as well as ETSU’s own dietician.

“We have our new on-campus dietician coming over to provide us with a cooking class,” said Darby.

The current schedule includes hiking, group workouts, workshops, nutrition class, and even a course on resume building.

“Our goal is to prepare these students so that they don’t have those questions of ‘Where do I begin?’” said Darby.
