The Department of Sustainability’s student work group, the EcoNuts, collaborated with Housing and Residence Life to present the school year’s first “Sustainable Sunday” on Sept. 11 in Tri-Hall Field.

The event, which ran from 4-5 p.m., displayed a smoothie bike, a creation designed for recreation and sustainability on campus.

Students participated by peddling on a stationary bike connected to a blender to create their own smoothie concoctions. This contraption has the blades of a blender attached to the rear of the bike, which is activated when someone puts the bike into motion, hence blending a smoothie.

“I want people to become more aware of ways they can be more actively sustainable on campus,” said Jolene Batie, an EcoNut member working at the event.

The Department of Sustainability plans to partner with Housing and Residence Life to continue their Sustainable Sunday series in the weeks coming up. They will host a group succulent planting on Sunday, Sept. 18, in Tri-Hall Field from 4-5 p.m.

“I hope through this, students will actually learn who the EcoNuts are and that we have a Department of Sustainability,” said Erica Malpass, sustainability coordinator. “Another thing I hope they get from this is simple messages of greening up your dorm room to be more sustainable.”

There are many events coming up that are hosted by the Department of Sustainability. The EcoNuts will continue to host a table at the ETSU Farmers Market every Thursday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Keep a close eye on its Instagram, @gogreenetsu, for updates on its up-and-coming Free Store and its pop-up shops.

The Department of Sustainability is always looking for volunteers willing to help out with campus cleanups, creek cleanups, community gardening, and more. If you are looking to expand your green thumb or are interested in getting more involved on campus, contact Erica Malpass at gogreen@etsu.edu.
