On April 7, ETSU’s EcoNuts, a sustainability organization, hosted a succulent planting event on campus.

“Multiple studies have been done that suggest indoor plants keep you happy and healthy. In both psychological and physical ways,” stated Madison Hayton, team leader for the EcoNuts.

All tools were provided by the EcoNuts for this event including the potting soil, the plant and the upcycled jar to home the plant. Participants received a walk-through of how to take care of their plant, as they were doing the planting at the event. The EcoNuts believe this is a great opportunity because plants help to improve mood, to lower anxiety and stress levels, and to improve office or workspace productivity.

“My favorite part about this event is that it gives students the opportunity to start owning house plants without any financial commitment and comes with educational advice for taking care of the plant,” stated Hayton.

The EcoNuts are students that work with the Department of Sustainability on ETSU’s campus. They provide education and outreach for students, faculty and staff. They meet regularly to discuss and plan future events and initiatives. There will be more events such as this to come, since their overall goal is to engage with the ETSU community through activities.

“Students have always loved having the opportunity to bring a little bit of the outdoors, indoors. Succulents specifically are good house plants, and fairly easy to take care of,” stated Hayton.

The EcoNuts have many more initiatives across campus. There is a community garden on campus where students, faculty and staff are welcomed to grow as they please with a community. Their Do One Thing campaign focuses on a different sustainability project each month. Another initiative is Bucky’s Career Closet, which allows enrolled students free access to a professional outfit once a semester.
