As the new semester begins, you might find yourself looking for some new music to add to your study playlist or listen to during the commute to class. If you’re like me, the winter weather can sometimes make your mood and school days feel more dreary. However, music is the perfect remedy to ward off any January blues that the rain and cold might inspire. Below, I have included a list of my favorite songs that always brighten my mood and make those first few weeks of the semester a little less dreadful.
- “Chinatown” by the Bleachers feat. Bruce Springsteen
“Chinatown” highlights the Bleachers mastery of the perfect pop sound, and the addition of Bruce Springsteen’s vocals on the second chorus adds an energetic lift to the song that is almost impossible not to jam along with.
- “Free” by Florence + the Machine
Florence’s new album Dance Fever is full of dynamic songs, but “Free” manages to capture the euphoria a truly good tune can elicit.
- “Evergreen” by Ritchy Mitch & The Coal Miners
In my sister’s own words, this song “sounds like a car ride in the summer with the windows down.” Enough said.
- “Never Let Me Down Again” by Depeche Mode
This song showcases the best of 80s pop with its synthetic sound and a catchy beat that makes you want to drum along on the steering wheel.
- “If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” by The 1975
The 1975 have certainly become popular since their new album dropped last year, but this song from a previous album is one of my favorites that displays their upbeat and unique style. The saxophone solo before the final chorus is something you don’t want to miss.
- “Ray of Light” by Madonna
Another song that is full of energy, “Ray of Light” speaks for itself as the queen of pop sings out, “faster than the speed of light, she’s flying.”
- “There She Goes” by The La’s
By far one of my favorite songs to listen to on my walk to class, and a bonus for nostalgia since it always reminds me of the iconic reboot of “The Parent Trap” starring Lindsay Lohan.
I hope these songs add good vibes to your playlists and days as we patiently await the warmer weather.
