On Oct. 2-3, the ETSU women’s volleyball team played a two-game tournament against Mercer University. While the team did lose the first of the two games, they did manage to come back with a 3-0 win the following day.
Highlights from the Oct. 2 game include Emma MacFerran leading the game with 8 kills, 0 aces, and 2 blocks. Gianna Blair was behind Macferran with 7 kills, 0 aces, and three blocks. The Bears did have an early lead against the Bucs as they started the second frame with a 10-5 lead. However, after both a kill and an ace from Chloe Smith, the team took the lead back, going 16-15 and forcing a timeout from Mercer. Player Alex Kreutzmann also managed 21 assists in this game.
The game on Oct. 3, however, had a happier ending for the ETSU Buccaneers. It was Karis Chatfield who led this game with 11 kills, 3 aces, and 1 block, with Makayla Bays behind with 9 kills, 2 aces, and 0 blocks. The frame ended with a 5-1 run for the Bucs and a kill by Blair, giving them the 25-19 win for that set. The team also dominated the third set with an 18-8 lead and never allowed the Bears to get closer than 24-16. This gave ETSU their first win of the Southern Conference games. The Bucs currently sit at 3-12 overall but 1-4 in SoCon.
The Bucs will continue to compete as they face off against Chattanooga on Oct. 9 and 10. It is sure to be an interesting match as they are ranked just below ETSU in the Southern Conference standings.
