ETSU students will be voicing their opinions Tuesday and Wednesday when they go to www.etsu.edu and cast their votes in the Student Government Association Elections. While there are numerous candidates running for the senatorial positions for each college, the main focus of the elections has been the race between the candidates running for the offices of president, vice president and secretary/treasurer.
There are four presidential candidates, two candidates for vice president and one for secretary/treasurer.
Jarrod Suits is one of the candidates for the president. He is a junior majoring in public relations and has been involved in the SGA for two semesters serving as attorney general. Suits’ main platform is changing the role of the SGA.
“We want to change it from student government to student service,” he said. He also wants the SGA to be the bridge between students and faculty, organizations and other students individually.
Suits is running on the same ticket as Kayla Griffith, a junior majoring in biology, who is running for vice president.
Griffith served as an associate justice on the student court last year. She said that she and Suits would be able to rally the campus and accomplish things. Also, she feels that it is most important for people to vote, whether they vote for her and her running mates or not.
The third person on Suits’ campaign is Lindsey Houston, a sophomore majoring in public business. She is an associate justice this semester. Houston is running unopposed for the office of secretary/treasurer.
A second candidate for president is Nathan Bailey, a senior majoring in physics, chemistry and philosophy and has been involved in the SGA for two semesters. Bailey said he wants to serve the students by taking control of the SGA and making sure things get done.
Bailey’s main platform is that he will serve the students through leadership, listening and honesty. He is running by himself.
Jared Ball, a junior majoring in political science is also running by himself. He has been in SGA for two semesters. He wants to focus on getting students more involved and more informed.
“I know a lot of people don’t know what’s going on,” he said. He said that he is running by himself because he feels he can work with any vice that is elected.
The final two names on the ballot are Ethan Flynn who is running for president and James Sheffey, his running mate, for vice president. Ethan is a sophomore majoring in business and James Sheffey is a juniorr/senior majoring in chemistry.
The duo’s slogan is “Bringing Life Back to Campus.”
They hope to element a block of time on Tuesday and Thursdays for organizations to hold their meeting so that commuter’s students can get more involved.
“Hopefully, that would create a snowball effect that would make ETSU a fun campus during the daytime as well as the night,” Sheffey said.
Students can vote online at www.etsu.edu on Tuesday and Wednesday.
