The Positive/Negative National Juried Art Exhibition returns to the Tipton-Ashe Galleries this spring, showcasing works from 41 different artists from across the country and continuing a tradition of bringing nationally recognized art to the Johnson City community. Hosted by the ETSU Department of Art & Design and Slocumb Galleries, this long-standing exhibit runs from April 6-25 and will display a mix of styles, mediums and perspectives that are shaping contemporary art throughout America.

Throughout the myriad works on display, audiences can expect to interact with paint, mixed media and more conceptual work. This year’s exhibition is juried by Dr. Brittany Webb, curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Her selections in this exhibit bring together both emerging and established artists, offering viewers a broad snapshot of today’s art landscape.

Webb is most known for her work, which focuses on modern and contemporary art through inclusive and interdisciplinary approaches. This diverse perspective helps her bring a more thoughtful and expansive lens to this year’s selections. Before her work in Houston, she worked with the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where she curated many exhibitions, most notably Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden and Taking Space: Contemporary Women Artists & the Politics of Scale.

With free admission and a nationally juried lineup, Positive/Negative 41 offers students and the community a chance to engage directly with contemporary art without leaving the Tri-Cities area.

Located in a former courthouse in downtown Johnson City, Tipton-Ashe Galleries are open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 11 A.M. to 3 P.M., and Thursdays and Fridays from 5 to 7 P.M. Extended hours are available during special events.

A closing reception will take place on Friday, April 24, from 6–8 P.M., featuring a juror’s talk by Webb along with special guests and partners Bravissima! Women Sponsoring the Arts, as well as refreshments from Dos Gatos Coffee. This event is free and open to the public.
