ETSU’s men’s tennis team improved to 11-6 this spring and 5-1 in the Southern Conference with a 4-3 victory over Georgia Southern at the ETSU Tennis Center Sunday.
The Buccaneers, who have won five matches in a row and nine of their last 10, garnered all of their team points in singles action. At the No. 1 spot, Marcos Pavlovich defeated his opponent Danie Van Den Heever in straight sets, as did Alejandro Salazar, who knocked off Mark Finnegan at No. 2 singles. Pavlovich garnered a 6-3, 6-3 decision over Van Den Heever, while Salazar defeated Finnegan 6-1, 6-4.
Diego Iglesias lost to Georgia Southern’s Noah Tyler, 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Fernando Fiuri improved his SoCon record to 6-0 with a victory over Uli Ebensperger at the fourth flight, 6-3, 6-1. Moises Serrano, who has struggled somewhat against conference competition lost a tough match to the Eagles’ Vincent Patry 7-6, 6-4 at No. 5 singles. Federico Ochoa took advantage of his first conference singles match by defeating Stephen Dubienski in three sets 7-5, 7-6, 6-1, at the No. 6 slot.
Georgia Southern earned a pair of wins in doubles competition, picking up victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Van Den Heever and Patry won 8-6 over Iglesias and Serrano at the second flight, while Ebensperger and Tyler downed Fiuri and Ochoa at No. 3 doubles, 8-6. At the No. 1 position, Pavlovich and Salazar teamed up for their third straight win, 8-6, over Finnegan and Lasha Janashia.
East Tennessee State will be in action again on today when the Bucs hosts Wofford. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the ETSU Tennis Center.

ETSU’s women’s tennis team fell, 6-1, to third-ranked Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Complex.
With the loss the Bucs fall to 10-15 (1-6) in SoCon play, while Chattanooga moves to 12-9, 6-2 on the year.
Chattanooga won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. ETSU’s Sylwia Ziolkowska and Aimee Villavicencio defeated Chatta-nooga’s Catherine Allen and Cynthia Oulevay, 9-7.
The Mocs dominated singles, winning five of the six. ETSU’s lone victory came at No. 4 singles as Jewel Aldea defeated Saskia van Velze in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
“We were tired today,” Buc head coach Steve Brooks said. “We have played three tough teams in a row and I think that challenge is what we need as we head into the conference tournament.
