The Diversity Events Planning Committee (DEPC), with support from 606 funding and Multicultural Affairs, held its first ever Step/Dance Show Tuesday night in the Culp Auditorium.
The event brought together students from various Greek and campus organizations to perform for a packed auditorium.
Allen Johnson, member of DEPC and Tuesday night’s emcee, kicked off the night saying that the show was a way for students of “all races, cultures and backgrounds to get together and fellowship outside of class.”
Five diverse groups of dancers kept the crowd on the edges of their seats for the 90-minute show.
Combinations of different groups, from Sigma Kappa and Phi Beta Sigma to members of the Black Affairs Committee, entertained the crowd with their routines.
At the close of the show, prizes were awarded.
First place in the step category went to the “K2Sigmas,” with the “Bomb Squad” receiving second and “Buc Wild” taking third.
In the open category, first place went to dance group “Polo” and the Black Affairs team took home second place.
After all groups of dancers had performed, DEPC advisor Joe Shirley was called to the stage to receive an appreciation plaque from the organization.
Members said that while Shirley gives them guidance when planning events such as the Step/Dance show, he always leaves them a lot of freedom to express their own creativity.
Organizers have been planning the event since September.
“We don’t want it to stop tonight … we want it to continue,” Johnson said.
Directly after the show, the committee convened and collectively decided that it was a success.
“This will definitely be an annual event,” Johnson said.
The DEPC is also considering incorporating a similar show into the fall 2003 Homecoming festivities.
Johnson said that any feedback on the show would be greatly appreciated and should be sent to zalj6@imail.etsu.edu.
He also wanted to add a public apology for the typographic error that caused him to wrongly introduce members of Alpha Xi Delta.
