East Tennessee State’s women’s tennis team fell to Wofford, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in its final regular season match.
The Buccaneers took the doubles point, winning at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Gemma Halim and Jessica Irey defeated Wofford’s Lauran Marie Whisenhunt and Mary Wallace DeBerry, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles. Juniors, Courney McInnis and Tatiana Arriaran defeated the Terrier tandem of Meghan Turner and Delaine Hare, 8-6, at the No. 3 spot.
ETSU picked up two singles victories from Halim and freshman Jewel Aldea at the No. 2 and 4 positions. Halim defeated Whisenhunt in a three set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 1-1 (10-5), while Aldea dropped Wofford’s Tara Hartness in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
The loss dropped the Bucs to 11-16 overall, 2-7 in SoCon play. ETSU will travel to Charleston, S.C., on Wedensday for the 2003 Southern Conference tournanment.
On Saturday, the Lady Bucs cruised to a 5-2 victory over Appalachian State, at the ETSU Tennis Complex.
“It’s always hard at the end of the year, especially when you have had several heart breaking matches, to stay focused.” Buccaneer head coach Steve Brooks said. “I felt like we stayed focused today and really played hard.
