Tuesday’s meeting of the SGA was the briefest meeting of the semester because there was only one item to discuss on the agenda.
One bill concerning student surveys, which was tabled at last week’s meeting due to complications and discrepancies, was tabled once again this week. However, the bill was tabled until the next Senate takes office, which will happen April 22.
The main point of the meeting was focused on a decision to veto last week’s vote by the Senate to pass Sen. Ethan Flynn’s resolution. The resolution was to create an organizational block of time, in which, organizations could schedule meetings or events could be held.
Caton said that the reasoning behind the veto is that although, originally, the idea was to aid commuters in getting involved on campus, it will actually harm the commuters.
Caton said that he and Flynn had visited the registrar’s office to check on the feasibility of this block of time actually happening. They found out that basically, this block of time is in a peak time for classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“Our priority should be the students’ best interests, and here, that’s class time,” said Caton.
Creating this block of time would only push those classes back to late afternoon, which could cause problems for some students.
Caton said that it would only hurt the commuters instead of helping them. He said that it could also cause problems for people with children or those who work because they would not be able to leave until later.
“Our traditional students are by tradition, non-traditional students,” said Sen. Chris Ziegler, who said that ETSU’s campus is basically set up like a community college.
Sen. James Sheffy called for an override of the president’s veto, and the motion received a second.
However, the Senate voted not to override the veto, and the decision stood.
Next week’s meeting will be the last for this year’s Senate and Executive officers, and the new Senate will be sworn in.
It will also be the last 606 funding session of the semester.
The meeting was followed by the SGA end-of-the-year picnic. and awards ceremony.
