Maybe you’re 18 and fresh from high school, or perhaps you are like me and waited for a few years before going to college. But whatever your age, I hope you find a home here at ETSU, and you enjoy your time here as much as I do.
I was wondering to myself the other day why exactly I love it here so much, and these are the reasons I came up with. Someone else might not see as much beauty here as I do, but if you look, I’m sure you’ll find something you like.
If you’re new here, take a long walk around campus. You’ll get to class quicker if you know the shortest way to get there, so familiarize yourself with the campus.
This walking tour is multi-purpose. Find the things you didn’t take the time to do at orientation (did everyone skip half of it like I think they did?), and while you’re at it, check out the arboretum (outdoor tree museum).
It’s pretty cool when you imagine what it took to plant, label and care for all those trees.
It always amazes me how many different types of people are here at ETSU. People young and old and of all races and religions come together here to learn. You can’t judge a book by its cover here, and you’ll be surprised by what you find when you get to know people.
The staff is pretty good, too. Of course, there will be professors that you like more than others, but that’s just life.
The biggest mistake I see students make is not having any communication with the professor. They should know your name at least.
Most of the classes allow a personal relationship with the professor.
I know that some classes are just too large to know everyone, but at least let them know if you’re going to miss a class. Generally, the staff understands that things happen, disks don’t work, computers eat stuff and it’s OK. Just be willing to talk to them.
Good luck this semester, whether you’re just starting out, or if you’re only a few credits short of graduation.
