Dear Editor,
Recently I read in the local paper that the 2003 ETSU football team was picked by the media to finish seventh in the Southern Conference. The coaches picked us eighth.
I was amused because someone has not been doing their homework.
Last year’s team labored through a 4-8 season, but any fan could see that the team was loaded with talent and just needed some fine-tuning and experience to be successful.
What about our offense? It will be much improved. Carl Meadows has apparently won the starting job as quarterback and Scott Butler seems like a fine back-up.
We have a good group of running backs spearheaded by Gaven Varner.
Likewise, our wide-receivers are a spirited bunch led by Brian Matthews. Randy Grubb opened some eyes during the final spring scrimmage with some impressive catches at tight end. Two or three others are pushing him hard.
We have a punter, Aaron Bass, who has an NFL leg.
Our offensive line is led by Eric Lasey and Brock Pittman. Many players have told me that Coach Kacyzenski of Notre Dame has convinced this unit that they can compete at a superior level.
This appears to be the team that could compete for the Southern Conference Champ-ionship.
If we don’t win the championship, then we will surely scare the hell out of the team that does.
Do yourself a favor and come see the last football team to represent ETSU.
Grab a friend or two and head over the dome for an afternoon of fun and you will see one of the finest teams to ever represent this university.
