Fraternity and sorority recruitment, also known as Rush week, is quickly making itself known on campus.
Sorority Rush was held Sept. 3-7, while fraternity Rush begins Sept. 15 and ends on Sept. 19.
While the Panhellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council sponsor the events, Joy Fulkerson, a coordinator with the Office of Student Life and Leadership, provides faculty support for them.
In order to participate in the Rush events, a student must submit an application along with a $15 non-refundable application fee.
“The application is used for a process of mutual selection,” said Fulkerson. “We work as kind of a match-making service so a student can be best paired with their chapter.”
The students and the organizations each “rate” one another to help this process work more effectively.
Fulkerson also said that sororities and fraternities have been involved in activities that allow students to get a sense of what each chapter does. From summer activities, information booths and receptions for incoming freshmen to sponsoring the welcome back picnic held the first week of school in the pedestrian mall, the Greek organizations have been dynamic in attempting to let people know who they are and what they’re about.
Rush week for the sorority side of the Greek community was filled with activities aimed at letting girls know about all the different aspects of each sorority.
Open house night, held Sept. 3, allowed the girls to go around to the different suites in Panhellenic Hall to get a better view of each sorority. Philanthropy night was held the next day to show the girls about the different aspects of philanthropy for each sorority. A theme night, held Sept. 5, gave each sorority an opportunity to talk about the social aspects of its organization and also gave members a chance to show their talents by doing skits about their group.
On Saturday, sorority members talked about their personal experiences with rush week and within their individual sororities. The final day, Sunday, Sept. 7, was Bid Day, when the girls must accept or decline new membership in a sorority.
The sorority groups on campus also work to support fraternity rush, which takes place Sept. 16-20.
Often, some girls from sororities on campus can be found at the fraternity houses, offering support to their fellow Greeks.
Like the sororities, the fraternities hold a night in which potential members are allowed to go around to the different houses to see what they are all about. This year’s house tours will take place at the beginning of rush week for the fraternities.
Wednesday, an event will be held in the amphitheater, followed by a guest speaker in the Culp Center.
The final day of Rush week for the fraternities is Friday, Bid Day, where each fraternity receives its new members for the upcoming semester.
Other organizations on campus that are not classified in the Greek community will also participate in their own forms of rush at other times.
