Since Sept. 11, 2001, the borders of the United States have become an issue worthy of debate.
Security-wise, the country’s porous borders coming from Mexico and Canada have allowed some to worry that Al-Quaeda terrorists might use these as a way into the United States.
The next obvious step would be to ask who should we allow across the borders? And is it within humane tradition to close or check identification of those coming across?
Classical liberals would say that it’s wrong to close the borders partly because of the fall of the iron curtain and a post-Berlin Wall world has opened up a society that’s free to move.
Richard M. Ebeling, writer for the The Future of Freedom Foundation, says, “If greater individual freedom and personal decision-making are to be achieved in the 21st century, if men are to have more opportunity for mutual gains, trade of all types, they must also have the freedom to move, travel, work, reside, and retire where and when they want.”
Now, in the dangerous world we live in and with terrorists at the door step, can we follow this blue print?
Arizona Republicans Jim Kolbe and Jeff Flake believe they have the answer with a bill they are sponsoring in the House of Representatives. One aspect of this bill, if it ever passes into law, is that it would seek to provide working visas for those crossing the border. Kolbe and Flake still do not account for the problems within the United States and the problem of a terrorist threat along the borders.
On the job market, illegal immigrants without jobs are receiving benefits without a visa and causing the jobless rate to soar.
A few weeks ago, radio host Paul Harvey said that the economy was improving but the influx of illegal immigrants made it look as though it was not.
Post 9/11 security is obviously quite different than it was before. Immigrants coming in now should have to go through strict and arduous checks. The reason being is very simple: The United States and its citizens do not want nor need another 9/11. Critics call this racial profiling, but it has nothing to do with race.
There have been two common links among the terrorists so far. They are predominantly from the Middle East and they are Muslims. Therefore, the United States has to do more checks for those who match those descriptions.
Changes must be made on the borders. Illegal immigrants should have to do the proper paper work before they enter the United States. If they do enter illegally, which some will, they should not be provided any benefits under the U.S. government.
This summer, a child of an illegal immigrant needed a heart transplant. She was sent to Duke and the surgery was botched. The family has filed a huge lawsuit even though they were here illegally. That’s using a free system for a payday.
I believe giving amnesty to those that are in the United States illegally is wrong because it proves that the process means nothing.
Check those immigrants wanting to come in and expatriate those who cannot abide by the laws of this country.
