Strong debate over the handling of a request for 606 Student Allocations money dominated the ETSU Student Government Association’s meeting on Tuesday.
The Student Ceramic Association’s application requesting funds to bring a guest artist to campus drew criticism from several senators. They cited the organization’s unclear presentation to the allocations committee, raising concerns over some of the details of the event.
The concerned senators also inquired whether the involved students would receive academic or class credit benefits from the event. They also noted the lack of access to the event, which is being held in the art annex near the back edge of campus. Representatives from the organization were available and addressed these concerns. They assured the senate that the public is invited, and class credit is not part of it.
Some senators remained skeptical and moved to follow the committee’s recommendation of no funding. After a tie vote, a brief recess was called while Vice President Kayla Griffith decided how to proceed. She chose to allow the motion for no money to fail, bringing the issue back before the senate. As the issue’s time limit neared, $500 was approved for the organization.
Griffith stressed the importance of organizations coming to the allocations committee organized. “It’s in the best interest of the organization to be prepared. They are not likely to get funding if they don’t know the answers to our questions,” she said.
Student groups are asked to answer questions regarding how their event will benefit the student body as well as providing details on the funding amounts requested. Many other questions are also asked of the applicants, all of which aid in determining how much money will be allocated.
Griffith also stressed that she would like more discussion from the senators during debatable issues. She cited the need for more input that would help the senate reach a strong consensus and provide more informed decisions.
The SGA also received funding to update campus maps. President Jarrod Suits said they were the SGA’s responsibility and currently were outdated and needed replacing and upgrading. He noted it has been several years since the maps were replaced.
Other organizations who received funds were Kappa Delta Pi, Preview/Orientation Leaders Organizations, OASIS, Cycling Club, Students Painting and Drawing Association and Association of the U.S. Army.
The SGA offices are located on the lower level of the Culp University Center. They meet each Tuesday at 4 p.m. in the Culp Forum.
