Dear Editor,
I was sitting here having my morning coffee and catching up on campus happenings with my East Tennessean when I read Marianne Steffey’s article on religion and homosexual marriage.
I don’t want to take a side on that issue, but I do feel the need to address one of her comments.
Steffey refers to “the two main religions that are protesting the movement; Catholicism and Christianity.” This has been one of my pet peeves since I was a young Catholic girl, and my friends wrongly accused Catholics of not being Christians. Catholics are Christians, just like Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians. The “Christians” to which Steffey is referring would be better described as Protestants (as in protesting and breaking away from the Catholic church).
This may just seem like semantics to you, but I’m hoping to save other young Catholics from having to defend this aspect of their beliefs. The Catholic Church has seen enough scandal in the past two years, and we don’t need people perpetuating the idea that we aren’t Christians.
