Last week, I ran the first of three installments of articles on the topic of homosexuality.
As I expected, it caused some heated discussions. After all, the column was focusing on religion and the ideas it puts forth about homosexual relations, and anytime someone decides to speak about religion, no matter what the pretense, someone is going to disagree.
But, I made a mistake, and I would like to correct any misconceptions that have arisen from it.
In the Sept. 15 issue of the East Tennessean, I wrote that “I would like to focus on the two main religions blocking the way of homosexual marriage; Christianity and Catholicism.”
This was wrong. What I should have said was “I would like to focus on Catholicism and Protestantism.”
I did not mean to imply that Catholics were not Christians or that they did not follow the teachings of Jesus. I simply meant to distinguish the different views they hold.
I had no idea this would cause more heat than the actual topic itself.
I apologize to all Catholics that I have offended and hope this will suffice as an apology. It was something I accidently overlooked. I would also like to thank those who wrote letters to the editor informing me of my mistake.
People who have read the article and all of the letters to the editor about the topic have asked if I intend to continue with the topic and finish the last two installments.
My answer is “of course.” I made one mistake and I won’t let that stop me. I have said before I think homosexuality is a topic worthy of time, thought and discussion.
I apologize, again, for my mistake and hope that everyone will keep reading. In Wednesday’s edition, I will look at society’s view of homosexuality.
