Dear Editor,
On Oct. 18, 2003, I will attend my last ETSU Homecoming.
I’ve been coming to Homecoming and most of the other ETSU football games since 1982, when I was a freshman.
I had been coming to games with my family for years before ever becoming a student at ETSU.
Now, I’m coming to Homecoming to say goodbye.
I’m saying goodbye to a special time of year that allows us the celebrate just how special being an ETSU alumni is in the lives of its graduates. I’m saying goodbye to all the great festivities that make this time of year so special.
Instead of saying hello to old friends, we will be wondering when we will see each other again.
You can package it any way you want to, but Homecoming won’t be the same.
I’m also saying goodbye to our team. This year has been difficult, but they are a group of young men who deserve for us to be there at kickoff.
These guys could have quit months ago. They could have left. But, they didn’t.
They stayed here because they love football and they love ETSU.
We have seniors who will never have a Homecoming to come back to. This group of men has played under some of the most psychologically adverse conditions that anyone could imagine.
But, when they walk through that fog, I’m going to be there. My friends who graduated from ETSU will be there, and my family, who knows how much this team means to me, will be there.
I hope that you will take the time to be there too. Let’s send this team and the last 80 years of Buccaneer Gridiron Alumni out with our respect and support. Don’t let them think that they are standing alone.
Kim Reece
