Dear Editor,
This is a letter in response to the article Driving requires responsibility, common sense in the March 25 ET.
I am in total agreement with author of “Mohawktown,” Randi Brockman, on this particular topic.
I can quite honestly say that I have never seen such careless driving until I moved to Tennessee. I know there are bad drivers everwhere, but there seems to be an abundance of them here.
People have adopted the theory that a yellow light means that they speed like a bat out of hell before it turns red.
Now I, as well as Randi, paid a mint to be taught how to drive by a driving company, but all in all, it was worth it. My instructor told me before I began my final lesson (which in fact was the test I needed to pass to get my license) that if he could see the light turn red at all, even while under the light pole he would fail me right then and there.
I have also noticed that the common knowledge of driving has done a complete 180, and really shows how many people do not focus on their driving at all – be it elderly or the young and hip.
After reading this article, I decided I would take a little time and observe those around me. I noticed that at least five cars in a time span of 10 minutes ran a red light from several yards away -while it was red that is – as if they were the only people on the road. If I had time to see that it was red, and slow down, shouldn’t they also?
Others I noticed, were too busy putting on makeup or talking on a cell phone to realize that the light had turned green two minutes prior. This kind of behavior is what causes road rage and just mindless mistakes. I really believe that Tennessee should tighten down their laws for people wanting to obtain a drivers license.
