ETSU’s women’s tennis team fell to the Davidson Wildcats 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Center.
The Buccaneers’ record drops to 11-8 overall, 2-2 in the SoCon, while the Wildcats record improves to 11-7, 3-1.
Davidson began the match by picking up the doubles’ point.
The Bucs’ Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) played in the No. 1 slot and were overpowered by Kelly Fillnow and Meghan Fillnow with a score of 8-0.
At No. 2, Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) battled to an 8-6 loss against Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powell.
Courtney McInnis (Water-boro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) were defeated in the No. 3 position 8-1 in their match up against Davidson’s Katherine Hatch and Sarah Borkowski.
In singles play, the Bucs’ lone victory came at the No. 4 position from Irey.
“Davidson was second in the SoCon last year and has entered this season with essentially the same team,” said head coach Steve Brooks.
“We had our chances but we just didn’t finish the point, and Davidson is a team we need to finish the points with,” he said.
ETSU’s women’s tennis action continues today as the Buccaneers host the Georgia Southern Eagles at 1 p.m.
The ETSU’s men’s tennis team defeated UAB, 4-1, in Norfolk, Va., on Saturday.
The Bucs improve to 9-5 overall, 2-0 in the SoCon with the win.
ETSU picked up the doubles point, by winning all three matches.
In the No. 1 spot, the Buccaneers’ Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) ripped past the Blazers’ Andre Maier and Anton Mavrin in an 8-3 decision.
In the No. 2 tilt, Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moiss Serrano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) defeated UAB’s Dino Mancarella and Sanzaruz Zaman, 8-6.
The Blazers’ duo of Ivan Andreev and Kristijan Mitrovski were 8-4 losers to East Tennessee’s Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Felix Insaurralde (Asunci?n, Paraguay) in No. 3 slot.
In singles’ action, the Bucs continued to dominate, winning three of four completed matches.
In the No. 1 position, ETSU’s Salazar was a 7-5, 6-4, winner over the Blazers’ Mavrin.
UAB’s Maier fell to the Bucs’ Posada, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 spot.
The Bucs’ Iglesias defeated the Blazers’ Mitrovski, 6-1, 6-2, in the No. 3 tilt.
UAB’s Zaman was the only Blazer to record a victory as he defeated ETSU’s Fiuri, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 4 singles position.
The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were stopped once the match was decided.
The ETSU men’s tennis team will now return for a stretch of three consecutive home games against Charleston Southern, and Southern Conference opponents College of Charleston and The Citadel, from Apr. 2 through Apr. 4.
