The students of ETSU have spoken, making Ethan Flynn, Brian McCormack and Aya Fukuda the new leaders of the Student Government Association.
But even after weeks of campaigning, the 2004-2005 executive board refuses to rest on their laurels. “I’ve got a lot of things I’m ready to get started on,” said president-elect Ethan Flynn, a current SGA senator.
His first act, he said, will be to make sure textbooks are put on reserve in the library to cut down on the ever-rising cost of higher education for students.
“Everyone has had a class where they have paid a $100 for a textbook, used it three times during the semester and then sold it back for $10,” Flynn said in his campaign notes. “That’s a rip off! If it was on reserve in the library ,you could check it out for an hour or two instead of having to purchase the textbook in the bookstore.”
To do this, Flynn said he’ll start setting up meetings with department chairs so he can better understand the ins and outs of the textbook business.
Flynn also hopes to tackle other student issues, such as making changes to the current system of parking, making students a higher priority in administrative decisions and increasing the number of on-campus events.
“I’m hoping we can utilize the Amphitheater more in the next year by bringing live bands to campus,” Flynn said.
Keeping campaign promises isn’t always easy, of course, but Flynn is looking forward to the challenge.
“There’s just so much we want to do, we want to get started as soon as possible,” he said. Flynn also said that his executive board is scouting for some exceptional talent for 2004-05 SGA cabinet positions.
These positions are as follows:
* Secretary of State
* Chief Justice
* Attorney General
* Secretary of Public Relations
* Secretary of Interior
* Secretary of Allocations
All qualified candidates will be considered, said Flynn.
For more information about the positions or for an application, go to the office on the second floor of the Culp Center or call 439-5225.
Flynn, McCormack and Fukuda will be sworn in on April 20th during the weekly SGA meeting.
“I think we’ve got a good group here with a lot of good ideas,” said current president Jarrod Suits. “I think this year’s SGA has built a strong foundation for them, so I look forward to seeing their ideas turned into action.
