Dear Editor,
The more I listen to the news, the more I hear people comparing Iraq to Vietnam.
At first, I thought maybe these people were right and we really were starting into another brutal 10-year war like Vietnam, and history was repeating itself.
After doing a little research on the Internet, I have come to the conclusion that the current position we are in with Iraq is not nearly as bad as the position we were in during Vietnam.
Some of the facts that I recovered were as follows:
We have been in conflict in Iraq for one year to date, and we were in conflict in Vietnam for 10 years.
Currently, in Iraq, the U.S. Military has lost 719 total soldiers.
In Vietnam, the U.S. Military lost 58,000 men.
The total enemies’ dead in Iraq are 10,000, while there were 5.2 million enemies killed in Vietnam.
Lastly, there are currently 3,466 wounded U.S. troops. In Vietnam, there were 303,000 total wounded troops. (All facts taken from www.thesakeofargument.com)
After researching and finding these facts about the two conflicts, I do not believe that history is repeating itself in this sense.
I believe that this current conflict in Iraq is bringing up memories of the conflict in Vietnam, and people are comparing the two in that sense.
In all actuality, the current conflict is on a much smaller scale than the previous one in Vietnam.
