Good things came in two for ETSU Saturday in their doubleheader against Appalachian State.
Tim Turner and Jeremy Hall both pitched their second complete games win on the season leading the Bucs (19-19, 10-10) over the Mountaineers 13-3 and 8-3.
Turner (5-5) followed Hall in the second game of the twinbill with a twelve strikeout, eight hit outing.
“I was just trying to match him,” Turner said, following Hall’s seven-hit, three-run outing in the first game. “I’ve got to match him. Every time he goes out there and wins, it puts a lot of pressure on me.”
In the bottom of the first inning, Andy Howdeshell singled in the Bucs first run of the second game when he drove in Stephen Douglas.
Appy St. (5-29, 3-17) tied the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice hit. ETSU would then unload on the Southern Conference’s last place team for three runs in the bottom half of the third.
A leadoff walk by Shane Byrne put the Bucs in scoring position. Blake Church then doubled off the wall scoring Byrne and breaking the tie at 2-1. Josiah Glafenhein singled in Church. An error then scored ETSU’s third run of the inning putting them up 4-1.
ETSU coach Tony Skole gave a yell after their sweep of the Mountaineers after extending their winning streak to five games after a sweep of Wofford.
“We had two great pitching performances,” he said.
“In game one, Jeremy Hall was tough. In game two, Tim Turner was just the same. Tim had a good tempo going and really made some big pitches in quality situations.”
Church and Howdeshell kept their 11-game hitting streaks alive. Church was two RBI’s on the day and Howdeshell had three hits, three RBI’s.
“If our guys can keep getting on base in front of those two guys, they will perform,” Skole said.
“They are our big RBI guys- we need them to keep producing. I hope they continue that streak.”
Turner did not give up any walks on the afternoon and a big four-run eighth inning gave him some padding to work with.
ETSU got some big offense in the first game Saturday ringing up 13 runs on 17 hits.
Defensively, ETSU was stellar in the top of the first with the bases loaded and two outs. Hall (6-4) got Jordan Eubanks to ground into a 6-3 ground out to end the inning; leaving three stranded.
Hall pitched his second complete game of the season giving up three earned runs with four strikeouts and one walk.
“When Jeremy (Hall) keeps his fastball down, he is tough to beat,” Skole said. “Our defense is something we take pride in and we messed up some routine plays. A lot of our guys made some big plays when they needed to keep us in the game.”
Church and Howdeshell led the scoring spree again. In the third, Church doubled in a run and Howdeshell followed him with a two-run blast over the center field wall putting the Bucs up 6-2.
ETSU combined for seven runs in the seventh and eight innings going into the final game of the set with ASU on Sunday.
The Bucs swept ASU 14-2 Sunday to complete a full sweep and extend their six-game winning streak.
