am bounced back from their 2-1 loss to Tennessee Tech with a shutout over non-conference rival UNC-Asheville on Monday night.
Head coach Heather Henson believes that this win was exactly what her team needed after the loss at Tech on Friday.
“The team did not close out the game against Tennessee Tech and in our practices over the weekend we worked a lot on defending and against Asheville in paid off,” said Henson.
In Friday’s game against Tennessee Tech the Lady Bucs had a 1-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles scored two goals in the final nine minutes to steal the win from ETSU.
The Bucs got the same 1-0 lead on Monday and there was no way they were giving it up.
The goal was scored by sophomore Rebecca Murray early in the second half off an Erin Ashton assist. Murray has had both of ETSU’s goals the last two games and her hard work in the off-season is paying off.
Henson said, ” She (Murray) attended camps all summer and she trained hard during the preseason. “She was great energy on the field.”
Henson was very pleased with her teams play against the Bulldogs. “We played excellent defensively, we won air balls, and we also controlled the middle of the field,” said Henson.
The game was hard fought and there were 23 total fouls in the contest, but the Lady Bucs kept their composure and were able to grind out the win.
There were plenty of reasons for ETSU to be excited for this game and one of them was that UNC-A handed the Lady Bucs their first loss of the season last year.
Henson said, ” There was definitely some extra motivation in this game because of last year, we talked about that before the game.”
Midfielder Adrian Mobley had great game defensively and goalie Christine Parks got her second shutout of the season.
ETSU (2-1) will use the win as momentum going into a tournament this weekend in Atlanta, Ga.
The team will face Georgia State at 7 p.m. on Friday and Jacksonville State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
“Georgia State and Jacksonville State are two talented teams with great coaching and this weekend will be a challenge for our team,” said Henson.
After those two games the team will travel to Radford.
