The final day of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Ridges was by far a good day for the University of Tennessee.
Tennessee had an excellent day finishing as a team 8-under par on Sunday. Led by freshman Philip Pettitt with a 5-under himself.
ETSU finished Sunday 4- over and the tournament at 21-over par, finishing tied at 13th.
With an 18-foot putt on the 18th green Philip Pettitt gave Tennessee the lead and captured the crown for Philip in the individual category.
Texas Christian University made a run late in the day, getting as low as 11-under before faltering on the last three holes and finishing second at 7 under par for the second time in a row. TCU has always played well at the Ridges finishing six times in the top 10.
Pettitt barely held off Oklahoma’s Anothy Kim winning by just two strokes. Kim, one of the top underclassmen golfers in the country, was the winner of the Phil Mickelson Award last year.
“Play was better,” Coach Fred Warren said after finishing on Sunday. “(I was) pleased that we finished on a high note – very, very solid golf.”
In looking to the team and who will start, Warren said, “Four guys look solid Rhys Davies obviously a Palmer Cuper, and Cian’s obviously got a good record. So I would say both [Mills and Gareth Shaw] of those guys will be in our top four.”
Cennydd Mills led ETSU over the duration of the tournament finishing tied for 10th in individual scoring, at even par for the tournament. Sunday was led by Jeremy Hobson, who came into the clubhouse Sunday two-under par.
The average score for the tournament was a 74, 2 over par for the course.
“We have a better team, better golfers and more competitive golf this year,” Warren said.
Technical mistakes hurt the Bucs, too.
“We lost some signing the incorrect score card,” Warren said. “We are hoping to build on it this year.”
ETSU was short of their best players – sophomore Rhys Davis and freshman standout Cian McNamara.
Both Davis and McNamara were in Scotland to play on the international level at the Home International. Next week ETSU will travel to Gorgia to play in the Carpet Capital Colligate where both plan to play.
