ETSU scored two goals in the final 13 minutes, to overcome a 2-0 deficit and escape Charleston with a 2-2 draw Sept. 26.
The Bucs Southern Conference opener was scoreless for one half, but seven minutes into the second half the Bulldogs struck first with a goal from junior Miriam Crawford.
Shawna Hartman scored The Citadel’s final goal after the ball bounced off the crossbar and she put it in the goal. ETSU coach Heather Henson did not like her team’s energy at the beginning of the game. “We needed to come out and make a statement in this game,” Henson said. “We didn’t come ready to play.”
The Bucs actually took more shots than the Citadel, but they just were not taking advantage of them.
“Our shot count was higher than theirs (the Citadel’s), but we just couldn’t finish our shots,” Henson said.
ETSU began its comeback when junior Erin Ashton set up Emily Fulcher for the Bucs first goal. The equalizer came with only eight minutes left in regulation when newcomer Aubree Snyder put one in the back of the net on an assist from Erin Ferris.
The goal by Snyder forced overtime, but neither team could break the tie.
Henson liked her team’s effort late in the game, but it is never easy to come from behind.
“Our team fought hard towards the end, but it’s never good to play catch up,” she said.
“We have played three or four games in the rain this season so it didn’t bother us.”
ETSU will now take their 3-3-1 record to Statesboro, Ga., to face Georgia Southern on Friday at 4 p.m. for the team.
