The Lady Bucs have had a tough season and are looking to better their record against UT Chattanooga this Wednesday. The Bucs fell to 2-12 on the season, 1-3 in Southern Conference play after falling to Davidson and North Carolina.
On Sept. 30, the Lady Bucs volleyball team traveled to Davidson, N.C. to play the Davidson Wildcats. The games proved to be a challenge for both teams going 3-2 (28-30, 27-30, 30-28, 30-22, 15-9) in favor of Davidson. The match dropped the Lady Bucs to 2-11 on the season, 1-2 in Southern Conference play, raising the Wildcats 5-13, 2-1.
The first two games went in Buccaneer favor, who led in the beginning of the third game. Davidson was able to tie up the third game, 19-19. Six ties were broken before Davidson took control of the game at 28-28 to win 30-28.
Davidson went on an 8-1 run in the fourth game helping them close game four, 30-22, and tie the match 2-all.
Game five was held by Davidson’s offense with 11 kills and a .435 hitting percentage. “This goes along with what we have been doing, winning the first two and then falling asleep through three and four,” coach Lindsey Devine said. “It’s a mental game we are as talented as the other team. If we win the first two we have to win the third.”
Jennifer Sartor led the Bucs with 18 kills, 19 digs, and five blocks, while Sara Scandiffio tallied 14 kills and Brittany Kessel posted 60 assists, six kills and nine digs.
The Lady Bucs were back in action at home against the Georgia Southern Eagles, on Sunday, Oct. 3. This match was not as close as the Eagles were able to put away three straight games (30-22, 30-21, 30-26) on ETSU court.
The first game was close when the Lady Bucs came within one, 16-17, but were unable to capture the lead. Game two was much the same. The Bucs tied the game up at 8-all, before the Eagles pulled away at 17-13. ETSU trailed the entire game, coming within three points, 26-29.
The Lady Bucs had a .029 hitting percentage and eight service errors. Kessel had another good game with 21 assists, followed by Callie Kiselich with six kills and a .308 hitting percentage.
“It was (a hard loss), but I don’t want to take away from Georgia Southern, they’re a good team,” Devine said. “They have good players that did a quality job.”
The youth of the team may have something to do with their record.
“College is a lot different from club. We’re looking to Karen (Freeburg) who is the lone senior to carry the weight of the team on her shoulders, which is hard,” Devine said.
ETSU Lady Bucs will be back in action Wednesday, Oct. 6, at home, when they face the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Brooks Gym.
